The St. Mary’s Spartans boys seventh grade basketball team were the 2016 CYO champions. And in 2017, they were making another run for the title. The boys won their two previous tournament games to give them a shot at two championships in a row. The team was facing the Junior Pride of Roncalli, a team they only beat by 4 points previously in the season, so they would have a challenge. The game started with a dominating tip off by Preston and Owen taking it down for a missed layup, then came Raoul grabbing three rebounds in a row. After that the Spartans tempo slowed with them being down 14-9 at the end of the first quarter. But the crowd got loud and the game was on. The hype started when Owen hit a 3-pointer to close the gap. It only went up hill from there. Basket after basket went in giving the Spartans a small lead at the half. The huddle at half was pumped, coach Randy brought up the motivation! The second half was nothing short of awesome. There was no stopping the Spartans. Everyone was on their game, and contributing to the game. Preston raked in points like there was no tomorrow. The team came out with a great victory and were champions once again.
A week later the Spartans placed 2nd in the St. Bernadette March Madness tournament. It was a great season, and we can just hope for another great season next year.
