In 8th grade we have just started learning about the Solar System. To get a better idea of what it looks like in the Science lab we made models of the sun out of sugar cookies, frosting, sprinkles, licorice and skittles. The cookie was the sun, the frosting was white because the sun is white, the sprinkles resembled the colors that we see from the sun due to our atmosphere, the skittles were sun spots, or cooler areas on the sun’s surface, and the licorice represented solar prominences; which are large, bright features that extend outward from the Sun’s surface.
