The 5th grade class at St. Mary's Catholic School in Bellevue, Nebraska has a tradition of hosting an annual bake sale to benefit children in developing countries during Catholic Schools Week. On January 29th, over $450 was raised for the Columban Fathers sponsored South American Mission Project. The proceeds will assist a school in Chile that teaches children how to grow and prepare healthy food and a children's center in Peru. One parent said, "we are very blessed at the generosity of this faith community.” We had one parishioner purchase a dollar bake good and hand the students a fifty-dollar bill. While smiling, he said, “keep the change [for your fundraiser].” When asked about their experience, students reported there was a lot of giving, it was fun and they felt proud when Tom Glennon, a Columban Father came to their table to thank them for their efforts. These are the building blocks that showcase why Catholic schools have an important place in our children's development of tomorrow's leaders. For more photos click here.
