A Summer to Remember

National Park collage BraxtonsmMy son, Josh is a 5th grader at St Mary's. He has always loved to explore. And throughout the years, we have visited national parks and state parks when we were in vicinity on vacation or travelling, but that has never been the sole destination of the trip until the summer of 2015. The reason is because when Josh was in 4th grade, his teacher, Mrs. Feagan kindled in him a deep love and appreciation for the beauty and majesty of our nation's natural treasures. Josh would talk about the parks he learned about and the excitement was contagious. So, the summer of 2015, Josh and his sister Anna set out with their Father on a three-week quest to discover America, like they had never done before.
The first stop was Rocky Mountain National Park. Josh reported, "It is extremely amazing for its wildlife and large peaks." Next, the crew reveled at the Arches National Park in Utah. From Josh: "The arches are extremely large. We also hiked the delicate arch trail." They stayed in Moab at the local "Downtown Moab Inn." Of course, The Canyonlands National Park was labeled a "must see" followed by the Grand Canyon. "It was cool to have the opposite perspective of Canyonlands."
After that was a long ride to 29 Palms with a visit to Joshua Tree National Park (of course, our Josh wanted to go there!). Josh shares with family upon his return: "Did you know that Joshua trees are actually grass?" His mom didn't know that.
The last week included Death Valley National Park, Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon, which Josh describes as "that last, but not least." "It was cool to see the hoodoos."
The trip may have ended, but the learning has not. At each National Park, Josh, Anna and Jeff learned about what made each park so special. They have taught that to countless family and friends...and it all began with a teacher who inspired her students.
