As part of our study of the Sacrament of Baptism and in conjunction with Jesus' teachings to serve those in the greatest need, the St. Mary's 5th graders were eager to put their faith into action. As baptized children of God, we are called to bring the Word to the world. Sometimes this means that we are showing loving kindness to those in our families and close circle of friends; and other times it means we give of our time, energy and resources to help those whom we will probably never meet in this lifetime because they live so far away. In order to get a better idea of how some people choose to serve Christ, we invited Frans Lang, Fr. Val Kyne and Fr. Gerry Neylon to share their mission experiences. As Columban Missionaries, Fr. Val has served many years in the Philippines and Fr. Gerry is currently serving in China. Their joy in the Gospel was evident as they told us of their lives living in solidarity among some of our brothers and sisters that are fighting extreme poverty, lack of educational opportunities, natural disasters and unjust social systems. Their experiences have really helped us realize that our actions here can truly make a HUGE difference in the lives of the people they serve.
The 5th graders decided to donate all the money they raised at the Bake Sale to kick off Catholic Schools Week to Columban Mission projects. We will focus on helping children that live in Myanmar, China, Peru and the Philippines. Thank you for helping support the students of St. Mary's School as they learned what it means to put others' needs foremost in their hearts and minds. Through the bake sale we raised $463 to help children around the world. For more photos click here.
