St. Mary's teachers are back in school. Since November Marion Lewis, Sharon Gaspers, Mary Jankovich, and Diane Embury have been spending the first Saturday of each month at the College of St. Mary and will continue through April. They are taking a Science course, which is a combination of lectures, hands-on activities, and learning more about the art of teaching. Their goal is to increase student/classroom engagement using strategies and activities that don't take a lot of time, are adaptable to classroom needs, and fit into the current Nebraska State Standards. In essence, they're learning new ways to make Science more fun. Who'd ever thought of using Oreo cookies to help students visualize the moon phases? Or a balloon and golf balls to increase student's understanding of the rotation/revolution of the earth? Doesn't it make you parents/grandparents wish you were back in elementary school?
