A Big Spelling Test

St. Mary's annual Spelling Bee was held Monday, February 8th. Mrs. Sobilo and Ms. Gaspers were official judges for the morning's lower level competition. Mrs. Feagan, invited back to narrate the Bee, introduced the participants in grades 1st through 4th:Abby and lower grade winners

First Grade: Anna Mlnarik and Caleb Miller
Second Grade: Abby Lee and Tristan Freestrom
Third Grade: Daniel Wessling and Clemens Pavlish
Fourth Grade: Raiyah Nader and Rosalyn Morales

After a practice round to help calm their nerves, the contestants spelled their grade level words. Words such as popcorn, fingernails, scissors, wailing, museums, refrigerator, immigrants, mysterious, and misery kept the contestants and the audience on their toes until the two finalists were determined.
Mrs. Wallinger and Ms. Gaspers awarded each participant their certificate and then handed out trophies for the top three spellers:
Third Place: Abby Lee, 2nd grade Second Place: Anna Mlnarik, 1st grade First Place/Champion: Daniel Wessling, 3rd grade
SpellingBeeWinnersUpGradeIn the afternoon the upper grades held their competition. The winners were: 1st Place: Dane Storch 7th Grade; 2nd Place: Anna Braxton, 8th grade; 3rd Place: Anna Bennett, 7th grade

Each year, the students from all of the Catholic grade schools in Omaha are invited to send two spellers to compete in the Midwest Spelling Bee. Dane Storch and Anna Braxton will represent our school this Saturday. Good Luck!
