Ryan McMaster took 2nd place All Around January 17th at the Rocky Mountain Open Gymnastics Meet in Colorado Springs, Colorado. This was his best finish to date at this gymnastics Open. Ryan started in gymnastics when he was three and entered his first competition at four. Way to go Ryan, an 8th grader at St. Mary's. Ryan placed first at the Emerald City Meet in Kansas City January 23rd and placed first again at the John Rothlisberger Ice Berg Open in Minneapolis on the 30th. He competes in all 6 Men's events: Floor Exercise, Pommel Horse, Still Rings, Vault, Parallel Bars and High Bar. His favorite events are the High Bar and Pommel Horse. Because gymnastics is such a physically demanding sport it is year round. Ryan practices 4-5 times a week for 3 and a 1/2 hours each practice. He has about five general meets from January through March. Then he competes at State then Regional's. Ryan competes for Region 4, which includes Nebraska, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin. The last two years he's qualified and competed at the Junior Men's Olympic National Championships. His short term goals are hitting new skills, competing well at each meet, qualifying for National's and mostly having fun with his friends from other clubs he's met through competing against them. His only long-term goal right now is an athletic scholarship to compete in gymnastics in college. For more photos of Ryan at Minneapolis click here.
