Fr. Chris Saenz a member of the Missionary Society of St. Columban and a St. Mary's graduate '82 came back to school to visit with 2nd, 4th and 5th grade classes just before their Christmas vacation. What a blessing since he comes home every 3 years. He brought out the globe so he could show the students where he lives in Chile as a missionary, told them what it's like living there, how they celebrate Christmas and about his mission of bringing people to Christ. The children were very interested in learning all about another culture, what the people eat, what they do, what they are like and what's the climate like. Father Chris told them Christmas in Chile is different than Nebraska, down there it's 90 degrees and summertime. There are Christmas fairs in the streets where people may buy gifts, most people go to Christmas Eve Mass where there is a live manger, and they act out the Nativity with a real baby portraying Jesus. Families share a big meal and maybe some presents after Mass and picnic on Christmas Day. The students asked, "What is a missionary?" He told them, John Paul II says, a missionary is where you are. We don't have to leave home to serve others. Fr. Chris is back in Chile serving the people there. For more photos click here.
