Every November Mrs. Feagan has her 4th graders research their family history. She does this project in memory of her grandparents who immigrated to the United States almost one hundred years ago. She wants her students to not only discover their ancestors but to see which ones might have also immigrated through Ellis Island. This year there was an unexpected surprise. For two families, those family ties became tighter. After listening to Mrs. Feagan discuss how immigrant names might have been changed, one student mentioned that happened to some of her relatives. Upon hearing the Polish name of her relatives, another student recognized that same name on her family tree. After exchanging some family tree information, it was discovered and confirmed by both families that they are distant cousins! What a small world we live in. How wonderful to have discovered new family members because a teacher asked her students to look into their past.
