Book Writing Craze Hits First Grade

Due to a generous grant from Target, St. Mary's proudly hosted a day with author and illustrator, Lisa Campbell Ernst. The first grade students were so interested in everything that she had to say and really took her words to heart. AuthorVisit1They have written thank you notes telling her that the most important thing they learned was that no idea is dumb. When we read a Weekly Reader about author and illustrator David Shannon, the students were excited to realize that both authors gave similar advice: never give up, no idea is dumb, work hard and practice. The most exciting thing is that the students are writing and illustrating books: two brought theirs from home to share with their classmates and during indoor recess three boys decided to spend their time in a collaborative effort writing and illustrating a book. So far, five students have proudly read their book to the class. A heartfelt thank you to Target for the grant that is already changing lives. For more photos click here.
