St. Mary's took two teams to the Battle of the Books competition at St. Vincent de Paul last weekend and came home with two trophies. Team #2 - Lia Reckmeyer, Cate Lillion, Annika Sjostedt, and Maggie Heltzel took second while Team #1 – Jaycee Billings, Paige Holbrook, Mary Jane DuGuay, and Jamie Legner placed 5th. Jaycee is a 6th grader and the rest of the girls are 7th graders. The battle took 12 rounds, almost 5 hours and a double elimination tournament. Twenty-eight teams competed and were divided into two pools. Each of our teams was in a different pool. Team #2 finished 4-2. Team #1 finished 3-2. Our Lady of Lourdes won the tournament. "Hanneman Hall" is where the girls ate and hung out in between matches. To prepare for the tournament the girls really enjoyed reading 12 books of various genres over 5 months. Books like, Chinese Cinderella: The True Story of An Unwanted Daughter by, Adeline Mah, Curveball by Jordan Sonnenblick, When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead. They started answering and reviewing about 150 questions per book that Miss Sheridan came up with in November. The girls practiced answering questions during recess together and on their own at home. They all had a great time! When one of the girls got in the car to go home, she said, "Is that it? That was so much fun, I wish it wasn't over." Only for a while, and they'll be back to reading and preparing for next year's books and competition! Congratulations! For more photos click here.
