Information Technology or IT as many of us know it, is a part of the fabric of our lives, it touches everything from social networks, healthcare to robotics. Code Crush is a program that immerses young women in a field that is smart, fun and something they might have a thing for. Two of St. Mary's 8th graders have been accepted into UNO's IT immersion program with all expenses paid. What an honor! Jenna Bellmyer is one of 30, 8th and 9th graders selected from the Midwest into the inaugural Code Crush Class Feb. 26-March 2nd. There she will get hands on experiences in IT workshops, meet professional women in the field and enjoy Omaha. Isabel Van Huffel has been selected to attend Techacademy. Techademy is a one-week workshop held at UNO during the summer. Students may choose to learn more about cybersecurity, bioinformatics, web & mobile app development, robotics, and IT innovation. These programs are designed to spark young girls interests in IT fields. Right now, women earn 18% of all computing and information science degrees and fill only 25% of all computing related occupations. The Bureau of Labor and statistics predicts IT will be one of the fastest growing job sectors with 1.4 million new jobs by 2020. Why not have a Crush on a field that can take your career almost anywhere!
