The first graders have been working very hard to practice the strategies that strong readers use. Through November we practiced telling a story with our voices by using expression and varying the rate with which we read. The students practiced a reader's theater piece that told the story of the first Thanksgiving. They used their voices and added actions to express how happy the Pilgrims were when they finally saw land and made it through the winter. The boys and girls shivered through the first winter, expressed joy that spring had arrived and bowed their heads in thanks for a feast and new friends. We made Pilgrim hats and bonnets and took our "show" on the road to present to other classes. The class agreed that it felt awesome to practice their skills in front of an audience.
