St. Mary's held its annual Veteran's Assembly Friday, Nov 8th. Approximately sixty veterans, including five WWII veterans, walked the scout-lined path to their seats. The Bellevue East Jr. ROTC performed the opening flag ceremony and later performed a rifle display commanded by St. Mary's graduate, Scott Walker. Younger students presented homemade cards to the veterans while grades two and up sang both the service branch songs and "A Greater Nation", thanking them for their service. Several speeches were given including hero reports by two eighth graders as well as words of wisdom from Mrs. Mary Bezy, Kathy Goetz and Col. Thomas J. Kallman. This year the school presented WWII veterans with a photo plaque and honored Middle East veterans with a patriotic magnet. The assembly ended with the bugler playing "Taps" followed by refreshments for our honored guests including Mr. Patrick Slattery, Superintendent of Catholic Schools in the Omaha Archdiocese and Carol Blood, representing the city of Bellevue.
