At St. Mary's, some 4th graders carry on a Christmas tradition by dressing up as St. Lucy. On December 13th her feast day, St. Lucy, the patron Saint of the blind, shines her light on the shortest day of the year. Her day marks the end of darkness as each new day brings more light. In Sweden, the eldest daughter wears a white dress with a red sash and a wreath of candles on her head as she walks around with cookies and biscuits. The 4th grade girls, in traditional dress, who handed out trays of cookies went around to all the classes telling a bit of the story of the martyred Saint who fed the poor.
