Honoring Our Heroes

VetDay1Veterans received a warm welcome at St. Mary's School. Veteran's Day ceremonies began with patriotic music playing and each veteran personally escorted into the gym by a student. Father Denny led an opening prayer and Mayor Rita Sanders told the students they would be the future veterans of America. Five WWII vets were honored, as they are every year, with a standing ovation and with fleece blankets made by the 4th and 6th graders. Then Vietnam War veterans and all other veterans were honored. The students sang "Here in This Place" which brought tears to many. We were blessed to have about forty-five veterans along with family members attend the event as well as representatives from the Army, Navy and Air Force stationed at Offutt AFB. This year's guest speaker, Air Force Lt. Colonel Laczko, stationed at Offutt, told us of his mother's amazing life story. Desperate to escape Communist ruled Romania she escaped and after enduring hunger strikes, got her family released to join her. The family eventually came to the United States where two of her sons serve in the U.S. armed forces. As students returned to their classrooms, an important lesson had been taught - that our veterans served with a great sense of pride, commitment, honor and responsibility. We pray that our students will look towards these men and women and become role models, as these veterans are role models for us. God Bless them all! (More photos here.)
