Making The News

Two Benefit Auction winners find out what goes on behind the scenes at WOWT Channel 6. Second grade teacher Mrs. Sobilo won the tour in 2010. Jack Nutter's parent's won the tour this year. Family and friends joined in the tour, which included the news stations work area, meeting rooms, theTourWOWTSept12 News Anchors desks and where they work to create the news. After that, they watched John Knicely and Mallorie Maddox give the news Live at Five. They could see how the anchors use the teleprompter and their iPads to give the news, not even flinching when the prompter wasn't working. Jack said the tour, "was really cool." His favorite part was watching the weatherman stand by a large green background and point exactly to the area he was talking about. Jack got to meet Jim Flowers, the meteorologist and Greg Ortiz who does sports. All the anchors were very friendly and down to earth. They provided pizza and pop for dinner and Mallorie Maddox sat down with everyone and answered all of their questions. Jack's mom, Bernadette says, "It was a great experience and I definitely have a new appreciation for the work they do. They spend a lot of hours doing research, stories, email, etc. and it is far from the glamorous job that I had envisioned news anchoring would be."
