In addition to the core subjects, we also provide additional learning opportunities through Explore classes offered for 7th and 8th Grades that will be yearlong.
The "Explore Drama" class provides an opportunity for 7th and 8th grade students to explore acting and stage performance at the beginning level. Class time is focused on acting fundamentals and improvisation, script interpretation, and creating all aspects of a character (walk, talk, accents, "Our curriculum is character motivation.")
This year, the Drama Explore class is split into two different quarters of the year. The class will be offered during 2nd Quarter and 4th Quarter and will meet on Mondays and Tuesdays during 9th period. The performances for both quarters will be held during the school day and the plays will be selected for an audience of school children.
Since the plays will be different for each quarter, a student may opt to take the Drama Explore class in both quarters.
Please note that extra rehearsals will be called as the performance dates approach. Students must be willing to practice after school the week of the play. It's a lot of work that pays off in big rewards!
Dates for each play will be published in advance. Parents and friends are welcome and encouraged to attend.
St. Mary’s is leading Bellevue schools with this program. The acronym STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Do you want to know more about engineering, science and how things work? Then this program is for you.
The STEM fields are those academic and professional disciplines that fall under the umbrella areas represented by the acronym. According to both the United States National Research Council and the National Science Foundation, the fields are collectively considered core technological underpinnings of an advanced society. In many forums (including political/governmental and academic) the strength of the STEM workforce is viewed as an indicator of a nation's ability to sustain itself. - Wikipedia definition
Our STEM Explore class will cover life sciences, robotics, and physical science concepts. Students will maintain accuracy in record-keeping, analyze small parts of systems and see relationships, use mathematical skills for calculations and measurements, predict and draw conclusions using data, read and understand technical materials, and think creatively to solve problems and experiment. The core of the elective is hands-on inquiry, where the students use math and science as they build and create models, run experiments, and communicate their findings.
The art Explore class allows students to explore art at a higher level than regular art class with a variety of challenging projects. Creativity and Individuality is expanded upon and highly encouraged. Collaborative projects are also a part of the Art Explore class.
