A Note from the Teacher

Welcome to First Grade!

This is an exciting year for the students and me, as together we create a community focused on respect, responsibility, and resourcefulness. These "3 Rs" permeate all aspects of our classroom. Students are given numerous opportunities to practice fundamental work habits, social behaviors, and problem-solving skills. They are encouraged to be partners in the many educational choices made throughout the day. Our goal is to establish a classroom where everyone feels safe and free to wonder, explore, and share their ideas.

First graders discover that they are readers, writers, scientists, mathematicians, anthropologists, theologians, artists, musicians, athletes, linguists, and techies. They study phonics, learn sight words, write various kinds of stories, listen to & read stories, and comprehend all genres of literature. They develop number sense and apply problem-solving skills. Students also become fluent with money, time, fractions, and geometry. They learn about communities, maps, animals, rocks, nutrition, and economics. St. Mary's resources help them discover how technology can aid them in their educational journey. They read, dramatize, and reflect on the Sunday gospel, so that each day we are reminded that our lives are guided by faith.

I welcome the opportunity to walk with your child as he/she grows socially, emotionally, spiritually, and academically!

St Mary's Information

St. Mary's Catholic School is a Pre-Kindergarten through Eighth Grade School of the Archdiocese of Omaha. Our mission is to provide a Catholic education that nurtures students' hearts and minds to become servant leaders in an ever-changing world.

Our philosophy of education is to offer a five-day program to assist families in teaching those truths, skills, and ideals, which are necessary for Christian living. We believe that education must develop the faculties and abilities of the whole child: spiritually, intellectually, physically, and emotionally. To help achieve this, our faculty and staff are an integral part of the formation of Christian community and dedicate themselves to the task of developing Christian citizens.
