Offutt AFB – Part of the St. Mary’s Parish and School
We are so happy to have you here. With the vagabond military lifestyle, it’s nice to have a sense of community and stability. St. Mary’s parish and school are your parish and school. We are 2 minutes outside the Bellevue Gate of Offutt AFB. We are a parish of military and military retirees that are from all over the USA and are settled here in Bellevue. Many of our parents and parishioners have had outstanding educations and careers themselves and want the same for their children. They have driven the standards for St. Mary’s and help keep it a vibrant school alive with smart use of technology and large doses of the real world.
Newcomers Briefing - "Right Start" is the mandatory in-processing briefing for all military and DoD civilian personnel new to the base. At Offutt AFB the "Right Start Briefing" is held the first Wednesday of each month at the Patriot Club from 0730 to 1130 hours. When you go, ask the Catholic Schools representative about St. Mary's School to get the "Right Start" for your children.
Why St. Mary’s?
Driven by tradition, parents, teachers and alumni, St. Mary’s offers an outstanding broad curriculum of Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Science, formal Art, Social Studies, Technology, Religion, formal Music, Foreign Language and Physical Education (sports training, not just play). We have found that this diverse curriculum stimulates different portions of the brain encouraging the neuron interconnectivity of young minds making them even smarter. Gluing this entire curriculum together is a Catholic focused school style. We love God and we care. We teach our students to care about their relationship with God and those around them. We show them how God is in their lives in every class they take. Religion class has full preparation for First Holy Communion (2nd grade), Confirmation (8th Grade) and a Catholic life.
We start early. We offer an outstanding Pre-K program that goes either half day or whole day. You will see your child not just play, but play with a purpose, coming home with new skills every week.
We also believe that books are not enough. Our students spend time learning about Nebraska Pioneer life and immigration at the turn of the 20th century through dress, cooking and outdoor life experiences. Our students are also involved in their community, and the world, doing service projects that touch peoples lives including visiting the elderly or helping other children who are sick or encountering tough circumstances.
With our depth of military and retirees, Veterans Day is a big event in school with students bringing Fathers, Mothers, Grandparents, Uncles, Aunts and others to celebrate in a large school assembly. We have active duty and military retirees participating from WWII to the current Afghanistan War on Terror. It is a very patriotic ceremony for our students to experience.
St. Mary’s School and Parish
We are a family centered parish. Many of our families attend our Sunday 9:30 and 11:00AM
Sunday Masses because we have a “children’s liturgy”. We have the children proceed downstairs in the church, during the Liturgy of the Word portion of the Mass, and the readings come from a “simplified” text that allows them to better understand the Word of God. After the homily, they are brought back upstairs to experience the rest of the Mass with their families.
Our Parish is so inextricably linked to the Air Force, one of our stained glass windows in our church, paid for by donations from our military parishioners, has a jet fighter set next to St. Joseph of Cupertino, the “levitating” monk from the 17th century and the patron saint of flyers. Current Parish members include active duty and retired, most served in the Air Force.
Getting to School
School is only 2 minutes from the Bellevue gate. Parents can drop children off for class before work and then pick them up at the end of their day through our St. Mary’s Extended Day program run by our school.
Another option is to drop them off at the Offutt Youth Center (Bldg 5085), located by the Army and Air Force Exchange Service Shoppette in Capehart Housing and the base bus will take them to school and drop them off back at the end of the day at the Offutt Youth Center. OYC phone: (402) 294-5152.
How Do We Do so Well?
Our parents care, just like you. They want the best for their children and they do all that they can to support our school through volunteering to help. Our parish cares. The parish pays almost half of the tuition costs from donations of our parishioners. Our teachers care and they work with children to assure not class success, but individual success to set them on an academic success track that can lead them to any school.
Get involved to help. We have a great parent-volunteering program at St. Mary's through Home and School. You could help us stay close to the base with your ties to organizations on the base, such as the Officer's and Enlisted Spouses Clubs and the Offutt Parent Advisory Board.
For our new families, we have $250 coupons. For those with more than one child, we have reduced tuition. Of course, no one is denied attendance. We can work with you and your family finances to make it work for your children as well.
